Discover Kauai’s ancient and recent past, as well as some significant archeological sites and sacred treasures.  Begin with the majesty of Opaekaa Falls–an 80-foot tiered waterfall. Opaekaa means ‘rolling shrimp’ and indeed the waterfall was named after the delicious crustaceans that were once abundant in its stream and pool.

Visit the Wailua River Complex at the Heiau, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962. This was the exclusive and sacred home, sanctuary and center of government for Kauai’s Hawaiian royalty. It contains the remains of many significant structures including Poli’ahu Heiau–a sacred and royal temple of worship that was in full and regular use when Captain James Cook visited Kauai in 1778.
